Sam sat in the passenger seat of the Impala with his notebook computer in his lap. This was pretty much his customary position, except on the occasion when he actually drove. Which wasn't all that often. Usually on the really long road trips they traded off driving duties, when they were in a hurry to get somewhere for a case. This wasn't the circumstances right now however. At the moment, they were at the end of an almost four hour drive from a case they worked up in Ashland, Maine.
They had decided to stop in Portland, Maine for the night. Both of them were exhausted and to put it mildly, Dean was just a tad cranky. Up in the northern part of Maine they apparently forgot to tell the weather that it was almost spring time. It was down right freezing. Sam had been listening to Dean complaining about frostbite for the first two hours of the drive. That was also as they had to wind their way through the back roads surrounded by dense forests until they finally made it to the main interstate.
Thank God for his laptop. He was able to tune Dean out for the most part. He was writing up some summary notes for the case they just finished. When he completed that he kept is attention on the laptop and just started randomly browsing the Internet out of habit. Searching newspaper articles, various web pages and such for anything unusual that might turn into something they needed to check out. Not that he was really looking for a job at the moment. Right now, he was just dog ass tired and couldn't wait to get to the hotel, take a hot shower and get some sleep.
Sam looked up from the laptop as he noticed Dean had turned off the interstate. They were almost at the hotel they would be staying in. This wasn't the typical type of place they stayed in, but it seemed to be the norm in and around the New England area. As they drove up the driveway Sam could see it looked like a very large, old colonial style mansion that was converted into a hotel. It was right on the coast. In the back they had their own marina and several large boat houses where apparently, guests could boat in to the hotel.
It didn't really matter to Sam. He was glad they were staying somewhere that was above their usual low brow hotel-motel. He was looking forward to some actual clean sheets that were soft and not the questionable cleanliness and scratchy hooker sheets they were used to.
As Dean parked the car, Sam closed his laptop and tucked it into his messenger back. Then he opened the door and unfolded himself from the car. He scanned the area, taking in the beautiful scenery of the area. He smirked when he saw that there was even a stereo typical lighthouse right near the hotel. After all, doesn't every place on the coast of Main have a lighthouse?
Smiling to himself he moved to the trunk of the car and started pulling his bags out. His messenger bag already strapped across his chest he hoisted his back pack over one shoulder and carried his duffel bag in his other hand. He turned to his brother, nodded toward the hotel and with a grin on his face he said,
"I call dibs on the first shower, dude." Giving his brother a smirk he turned and started walking to the front doors of the hotel.

Dean WinchesterDean was in a crappy mood as he drove along the Interstate. They’d just spent the past couple of days battling a damn rugaru in the middle of friggin’ Antarctica. At least, it might as well have been Antarctica for how cold it was. Dean was bruised, bloody, dirty, and tired. All he wanted to do was pass out somewhere warm.
Until then, he settled for AC/DC.
When they pulled up to the hotel, Dean was a little surprised. It was this big mansion on the water – not their usual pit-stop, but Dean would take it. He would’ve taken just about anything with walls and a mattress at this point.
Dean parked the car and grabbed an I.D. and a credit card out of the glove box while Sam got out. According to both the license and the credit card, his name was Joe McManis and he was a Maine State Trooper. He tucked the two cards into an inside pocket of his leather jacket before taking his keys out of the ignition and getting out of the car.
He met Sam at the trunk and grabbed his duffel bag, unzipping it to check and make sure everything was where it should have been. He set the bag down on the ground and pulled up the bottom of the trunk to grab his gun and some ammo. He tucked the gun in the back of his jeans and pocketed some ammunition before closing the false bottom.
“I got dibs on the first shower, dude,” Sam said.
Dean rolled his eyes.
“Go for it, dude. You smell like a dirty gym sock.”
He closed the trunk and picked up his duffel bag before following Sam inside. The lobby looked way fancier than he was used to. It had high ceilings and a floor you could probably eat off of, but he was sure that was frowned upon. There was a fire going in a large stone fireplace and he felt the warmth hit him as soon as he stepped through the door. A large desk stood several feet in front of them. Dean leaned over to Sam with a smirk.
“Welcome to the Overlook Hotel,” he muttered. “Redrum, redrum.”
He chuckled, then shrugged and walked up to the desk. He peered around, but there didn’t seem to be anyone behind the desk. It was kind of late. Hopefully they could still check in, or this poor bastard was about to get a piece of Dean’s mind, or maybe the butt end of a shotgun to the face.
Dean tapped a small gold bell that sat on the desk. The ping rang out loud and clear through the lobby. He set his bag down and waited. After a few seconds he frowned and rang the bell again.
“Hello? Anybody workin’ here?” he called gruffly.
He shook his head and rubbed the back of his neck. All his muscles were tight and aching. He needed to lay down and relax before he had an aneurism or something.
